What is an Acne?

It is defined as a condition in which there are changes in the skin. It is also known as the acne vulgaris. The changes in the skin occur due to the pilo sebaceous units. The skin structures involved are the hair follicle along with the sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands are also involved. A non inflammatory follicular papules are formed and the inflammatory papules are formed in the severe forms. It is also accompanied by the pustules and nodules. This area affects the skin which is rich in the sebaceous follicle and the areas included under this are face, upper portion of the chest and back.

The severe form is inflammatory and the acne also includes the non inflammatory forms. These lesions are known as pimples, spots, zits and acne. This condition occurs during the adolescence period and affects almost 90 percent of the teenagers. It is continued till adult hood. Its intensity increases with the increase in sex hormones. It affects both the genders. In most of the people the acne disappears and reappears. It decreases as the individual reaches in his twenties. There is no way in which one can predict the duration of this disorder. It can extend till 30 and 40 years of age. The most commonly affected parts are the face and neck.

The acne are also present in the chest, back and shoulders. The upper arms have acne but the lesions found are keratosis pilaris. The acne lesions are mainly in the form of inflammatory papules, pustules and nodules. The nodules are also referred as a cyst. They are also known as the nodulo cystic which denotes the severe cases of acne. It leads to scar formation. It also affects the psychological well being involving the self esteem. It may lead to the depression or suicide. It occurs during the adolescent period when the individuals are socially insecure. It requires early and aggressive treatment so that the impact of the lesion can be reduced.

The acne word came from a Greek word it means a sense of skin eruption. The acne basically means a pustules and papules. The acne vulgaris is the most common form of acne. Most of the teenagers have this type of acne. The acne vulgaris means the presence of comedones. The synonym of rosacea is acne rosacea. In the rosacea type there can be no comedones. The exposure to poly halogenated compounds may lead to the chloracne.

What is the history of Acne?

Its history dates back from the ancient times. In the Egypt there were many pharaohs which suffered from acne. The acne word means a point or peak. In the ancient Rome taking bath in the hot water which has sulphur in the water was the available treatment of acne. The skin problems were mentioned by the writer Celsus. In the 19th century the dermatologists use sulphur in the treatment of acne. They dry the skin.

In the year 1920 benzoyl peroxide was used. In the year 1930 laxatives were used to cure and radiations were also helpful. They were helpful in the case of chastity pimples. In the year 1950 antibiotics came into the use and had beneficial effects on the acne. They were taken orally initially and they were effective owing to their anti inflammatory nature. The benefit was derived not from killing the bacteria.

The topical antibiotics became available later on. In the year 1960 the low radiation treatment was used. In the year 1970 tretinoin was effective for the treatment of acne. This was replaced by oral iso tretinoin. In the year 1980 accutane was introduced and it was a teratogen. It lead to many birth defects during the period of pregnancy. In the US alone more than 2000 women took this drug during pregnancy and most of them showed pregnancies with abortion or miscarriage. In the year 1990 laser treatment was used. In the year 2000 blue or red light therapy was used.
