It is defined as a condition in which there is a formation of brown to black irregularly defined hyper pigmentation of the skin. It occurs in the body folds. It includes the posterior and lateral position of the neck, axilla, groin, umbilicus, fore head and other un specified areas.

It results into the abnormal growth and there is a stimulation of the color producing cells which are referred as melanocytes. Diabetes mellitus is the most common cause of the insulin resistance. The other causes of the insulin resistance are obesity and poly cystic ovary syndrome.

There is a para neo plastic syndrome which is referred as an acanthosis nigricans. It is known as the acanthosis nigricans maligna. Sometimes mucus membrane is also followed. It can also exist with the malignant condition. In the individuals which are above 40 it is associated with the internal malignancy. It is adeno carcinoma and most commonly in the GIT tract and in the lungs also. It also involves the breast, ovary and prostrate. If it is present in the oral mucosa or tongue it suggests a neoplasm. The other causes of this disorder can be familial, drug induced or it can be idiopathic.

One must look for the proper cause of this disorder. One must go for blood tests, endoscopy or x rays to rule out the possibility of diabetes or cancer.

The people with this disorder must be screened regularly for the diabetes. They can also be diagnosed for the cancer. It can be treated with the control in the blood glucose level and the diet of the patient.
