What does an allergy mean?

It is defined as a disorder in which there is an involvement of the immune system. It is also known as the atopy. These reactions occur to normal harmless environmental substances referred as allergens. They are acquired and predictable and fast in onset. It is a type of hyper sensitivity and is known as the type 1 hyper sensitivity. It is of the immediate type. In this there is an activation of the white blood cells which are mainly the mast cells. It also includes the basophiles by a type of antibody known as the IgE which causes an extreme inflammatory response. There are common allergy reactions which include the hives, eczema, hay fever, asthma and food allergies. There are also reactions to the venom of stinging insects like the wasps and bees.

A hay fever is a mild type of allergy which is quite prevalent in the human population. It may lead to the symptoms such as allergic conjunctivitis, itchiness and a running nose. They play an important role in asthma. There are some people who have a severe allergy from the diet, medicines and environment. It may result in the life threatening conditions and may lead to the death of individual. There are multiple tests in the market to diagnose these conditions. It includes the testing of a skin by a response known to allergens. In this blood is examined for the presence and the levels of allergen specific IgE.

The treatment for this condition includes the avoidance of allergen, use of anti histamines, steroids and oral medicines. There is an immune therapy which is done to desensitize the response to allergen along with a targeted therapy. There is a medical specialty which deals with the study of allergies and is known as the allergology.
