It includes the infants with SCID which have pneumonia, chronic diarrhea, and widespread skin rashes, along with the slow growth rate as compared to the healthy children. Some also suffer from the neurological problems like developmental delay, movement disorders, and hearing loss. If not treated children with this disorder usually live only a year or two.

In the year 1990 and on September 14 the first gene therapy to counter the disease was done by Dr. W F Anderson. It was performed on a 4 year old girl named A De Silva at the national institute of health in the United States of America.
