It is defined as a disorder in which there is a deficiency of the vitamin C. Vitamin C is required to make collagen which is a protein in nature. Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid. This disorder leads to the formation of points on the skin. The gums are swollen and they have ability to bleed. The points are present on the thighs and legs. The individual with this disorder looks pale and is depressed and cannot move properly. In the later stages of this disease one sees a wound which has pus in them and also there is a mobility of teeth which ultimately leads to loss of teeth.

This disorder was common among sailors, shippers and in the pirates. It was present among soldiers also. They have one thing common that is they do not get some fruits and vegetables for a long period of time. This disorder can be treated with the help of herbal medicines. This disorder has lead to killing number of people who go non long distance voyages.

It can be treated with the help of citrus fruits mainly which are rich in vitamin C. In the year 1932 it was known that the deficiency of vitamin C leads to scurvy. This disorder in infants is also known as Barlow’s disease. Some also refer it to mitral valve prolapse. It is not common in the animals as they can make their own vitamin C. There are humans including the primates who cannot make the vitamin and depends on the diet. Oranges, lemons, limes, cabbages, green peppers and grape fruits are a rich source of vitamin C.

One can use lemon juice to add to fruits and vegetables which are not rich in vitamin C. Liver of animals is rich in vitamin C. One can also obtain addition nutrients which act as a source of ascorbic acid. They can prevent the scurvy. There are few soft drinks and candies which have vitamin C in the form of preservative.
