It is defined as a disorder in which there is a loss of tooth structure mainly roots. It starts slowly and involves the complete root. There are many factors which can lead to this disorder. It starts slowly with involving different layers of teeth. It may be brown or black in color. It is a progressive disease in which there is a role of micro organisms which involve the hard tissues of tooth which are present in the oral environment. This leads to loss of minerals of the inorganic portion of teeth and the loss of organic portion of teeth leading to cavity formation.

What are the signs and symptoms of Root caries?

It includes the sensitivity to cold followed by sensitivity to hot. It leads to the pain at end. The pain is radiating and is non bearable. It increases during the night time as the patient lies down. He is not able to eat or drink anything. He has a constant and a throbbing pain. He is not able to sleep properly. In severe cases one may see a swelling later on.

How Root caries can be diagnosed?

It includes the use of visual examination and a patient history. One can also go for x rays as well as the use of signs as well as symptoms. One can also go for dyes which help in the detection of caries. The recent methods of diagnosis are diagnodent and trans illumination.

How Root caries can be treated?

It includes that there is no specific treatment for this disorder. One must identify the cause for it and must act against it. It is mainly treated on the basis of type and extent of caries. If the caries is present in dentin and is reversible in nature it can be treated with the help of restoration. If the caries is present in pulp and is irreversible in nature it can be treated with the help of root canal treatment.

How Root caries can be prevented?

It includes the avoidance of any irritating factor. One must avoid alcohol, tobacco, sweet things as well as the cigarette smoking. One must maintain proper oral hygiene. One must brush at least twice daily with the help of dentifrice. One can also go for flossing also. One must rinse after every meal.
