Fever is a frequent medical symptom that describes an increase in internal body temperature to levels that are above normal. Because a fever can occur with many different conditions, other signs and symptoms can often help identify the cause. It occurs when the body’s internal “thermostat” raises the body temperature above its normal level. You can get typhoid fever if you eat food or drink beverages that have been handled by a person who is shedding S. It is also associated with headache, other bodily aches and pains, rapid breathing and rapid heart rate. Some parents fear that fevers will cause seizures. For the great majority of children, this is not the case. However, febrile seizures do occur in some children. This thermostat is found in the part of the brain called the hypothalamus. Fever is not an illness. Far from being an enemy, it is an important part of the body’s defense against infection. In some children below the age of five, fever may lead to convulsions which are known as febrile convulsions.
