It is defined as a disorder in which there is a 3 or more stools which are loose or in the form of liquid per day. This definition has been given by the world health organization. In the developing countries this is the main cause of death. Most of the infants also die due to this disorder. There is a loss of fluid which can lead to dehydration. This affects the balance of electrolytes in a negative manner. It affects the children more as compared to the adults. The treatment can be done with the help of oral salts which helps in the rehydration and zinc tablets which have saved a lot of children.

What are the different types of diarrhea?

There is a secretory diarrhea which means that there is an increase in the secretion or stop in the process of absorption. The structure remains the same. The most common reason linked with the diarrhea is the toxin of cholera which increases the secretion of chloride ions. Sodium comes along with the chloride so that the balance can be maintained.

There is an osmotic diarrhea which means that there is a too much with drawn of water from the bowels. It can occur due to improper digestion and leads to leaving of nutrients in the lumen of intestine. There are certain chemicals which are taken in case of constipation and are known as laxatives. They can also lead to osmotic diarrhea. This type of diarrhea can also occur in the healthy individuals which have undigested lactose and along with a large amount of magnesium or vitamin C. The problem in absorbing lactose is mainly seen in the cases of lactose intolerance. The individuals with a problem in the absorption of fructose can also lead to diarrhea if one takes a large amount of fructose. The food which is rich in the fructose and glucose is less likely to cause diarrhea but the sugar free food can lead to diarrhea.

There is an exudative diarrhea which means that there is a presence of pus and blood in the stool. It occurs in the cases where there is an inflammation of the bowel system as in case of ulcerative colitis.

There is a motility related diarrhea which means that there is a fast movement of the food in the intestine. At the high speed there is a not enough time so that the water or nutrients can be absorbed. This condition can also occur due to increase in the level of thyroid hormones. One must use the anti motility agents like loperamide. This condition is also seen in the individuals who have part of their bowel removed so the time to absorb nutrients as well as water is less.

There is a inflammatory diarrhea which means that there is an injury to the lining of mucus which leads to loss of fluids which is rich in protein. It also decreases the ability to absorb the fluids which are lost. This type of diarrhea has all the features of diarrhea mentioned above. It can occur due the infection caused by bacteria, virus or parasite. It can also occur due to the inflammation of the bowel system as in case of ulcerative colitis.

There is a dysentery diarrhea which means that there is a presence of blood in the stools. It is not a diarrhea.

What are the signs and symptoms of diarrhea?

It includes the features as mentioned above like the presence of pus and blood in the stool. It occurs in the cases where there is an inflammation of the bowel system. In some cases there is a presence of blood in the stools.

How diarrhea can be treated?

It includes the use of fluids as well as salts. It occurs mainly by the mouth known as oral rehydration therapy and one can also go for intra venous use. One needs no diet restrictions and studies do not support the fact that the limitations of milk in children do not have a significant role in case of diarrhea. The medicines like loperamide are quite benefit and are not used in the longer term.

The medicines include the use of antibiotics, anti motility agents and some compounds made of bismuth. There are other alternative therapies also.

The role of antibiotic is to act against the bacteria which cause this condition. It is quite effective in the case of acute conditions. They antibiotics may lead to some disorders.

The role of anti motility agents like loperamide to prevent this condition which is also seen in the individuals who have part of their bowel removed so the time to absorb nutrients as well as water is less.

The role of bismuth compounds is to decrease the movements of bowel mainly in the people who travel a lot. The duration of illness remains the same. It is recommended if there is no blood present in the diarrhea.

The role of alternative therapies is to prevent the recurrence of diarrhea which is very well played by the role of probiotics. It includes mainly the use of lactobacilli. The people who suffer from intolerance of lactose take enzymes which contain lactase when they take daily dairy products.

How diarrhea can be diagnosed?

It includes the further investigation as we see diarrhea in case of infants, its association with the blood, travelers and in case of food holders. It is also investigated in case it continues for few days. If it is in link with the other symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, loss of weight and fever than again further investigation is required.

How diarrhea can be prevented?
