It includes the use of ultra sound or magnetic resonance imaging which stands for the MRI. The most available and cost effective method is of trans vaginal ultra sound. It shows an enlarged uterus. The ultra sound shows a uterus with non uniform texture with no properly defined masses that can lead to the uterine fibroids. A better diagnostic capability is provided by the MRI which occurs due to the increase in spatial and resolution contrast. It is not limited by the presence of bowel gas or calcified uterine fibroids as seen in the ultra sound.
A thickened junction zone is seen in the case of uterus with well diminished signals which occur on the T1 and T2 weighed sequences. It occurs due to the effect of iron deposition as a result of chronic micro hemorrhage. The junction zone with a thickness more than 10 to 12 mm is a prominent feature of adeno myosis. If it is more than 8 mm it is considered to be normal. They also show a thickened, hypo intensive signal of the junction zone and one see foci of large brightness on the T2 weighted scans. It represents a small cyst like dilated glands which shows acute phases of micro hemorrhage. This disorder can be classified by the magnetic resonance which relies on the depth of penetration of ectopic endo metrium in the myo metrium.
