This condition is mainly diagnosed by the use of ultra sound, CT and physical examination. The x ray show the aneurysm outline only when it is calcified. It occurs among less than 50 percent of the individuals.
The ultra sonography helps to determine the size of aneurysm. It also helps to identify the free peritoneal fluid. This technique is not invasive and is sensitive. The presence of gas in the bowl and obesity can limit its use. Nearly 100 percent sensitivity is seen with the help of CT scan and it helps to plan the operation. It gives a good detail about the anatomy and the need for endo vascular repair. It also helps to detect the retro peritoneal fluid if there is a chance of suspected rupture.
The other methods which are helped to visualize the aneurysm are MRI and angiography. The U.S preventive task force has given certain guidelines for the clinical practice. The triple A condition must be screened by the use of ultra sonography among men. They must be 60 to 70 year old and must be smokers. This comes under grade B recommendation and the meta analysis gave a result that 850 patients must be screened.
A large randomized controlled trial consisted of 65 to 74 year old man in which the abdominal aortic aneurysm was detected. They were followed up. The men with an aortic diameter of 3 to 4 cm were rescanned every year and those with the aortic diameter of 4 to 5 cm were rescanned after 3 months. The surgery was done on some specific cases. The results showed that the short and long term benefit and cost effectiveness of the treatment.
In the U.S there was a free screening of the triple A condition for the qualified seniors that is the man who smoke 100 cigarettes in life and men and women who have a family history of this condition. It was done by SAAAVE act which refers to the screening abdominal aortic aneurysm very effectively. The people who are enrolled visit their health professionals so that they must undergo physical examination and must complete the first six months of the eligibility of Medicare. But this time limit is not fixed. The risk factors of triple a condition must be kept in mind when the performer does the order of screening and the physical examination.
