It is defined as a disorder in which there is a disease that is caused by bacteria- CLOSTRIDIUM BOTULINUM. It is a rare disease that produces toxicity in the body. This bacterium is found in food that is improperly prepared and ingested.
It includes the symptoms which arise by the production of toxins by the bacteria in the body after 12-36 hrs. of ingestion of contaminated food.
The chief signs and symptoms are fatigue, weakness, and vertigo, followed by blurred vision, dry mouth, and difficulty in swallowing and speaking. Vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal swelling are other signs and symptoms. There may be weakness in the neck and arms, and then it extends to the respiratory muscles and muscles of the lower body. There may be difficulty in breathing due to paralysis of respiratory muscles. Presence of fever may be there with unconsciousness. In Mostly cases recovery takes place if immediate treatment is provided. This bacterium is found in the ill preserved foods such as meat products, smoked fish and even in not properly processed canned food.

It can be treated with the help of an administration of anti toxin after clinical diagnosis. Severe cases require supportive treatment, like ventilation. Antibiotics are only required in case of wound botulism. Though we have botulism vaccination but due to its side effects its not commonly used.
Better and hygienic food preparing practices are needed for the prevention of the condition. Inhibition of growth of the bacterial spore is required for the prevention. Heat sterilization and refrigeration with salt and acid content is beneficial.
