It is defined as a disorder in which there is a deep line which is quite grooved. It runs in the finger nail from side to side. It looks like indentations. It was named after a physician J H S Beau. It was described in the year 1846. These are horizontal lines which move from across the nail. It must not be confused with the ridges which are vertical in nature and occur as a result of aging. These are harmless. It must be differentiated from the muehrckes lines. These lines are real ridges and indentations. These are seen on the nail plate. The muehrckes line denotes hypo pigmentation without the ridges which are palpable.

Human gets these lines as a result of stoppage of the cell division in the matrix part of nail. It may occur as a result of infection or problem in the nail. It starts from where the nail starts. The other reasons can be trauma, skin or a systemic disease. Diabetes and the use of beta blockers can also lead to this condition. One must avoid the use of chemo therapy and must take proper diet.

In children one can see a Kawasaki disease. The lines can be seen few months after the fever starts.
