It is defined as a disorder in which there is a formation of the cyst in a knee due to the swelling caused by a fluid. It extends to the back part of knee and is referred as the popliteal area. This cyst is also known as popliteal cyst. The increase in the fluid in knee joint is compressed by the body weight and the fluid can become entrapped and lead to the formation of sac known as baker cyst. It is named by the British physician known as W M Baker.

What are the signs and symptoms of baker’s cyst?

It includes there are no specific symptoms associated with it. There can be a pain in the knee with the tightness seen over it. It occurs when the knee is extended. It is seen as an extension behind the knee that is noticed when an individual is standing. It is soft and not much painful. The condition can become worse if the fluid goes inside the leg and between the calf muscles. The cyst can break and the fluid goes to inner part of leg which may also move to inner ankle. The swelling of leg is linked with the breakdown of baker cyst. The increase in swelling can occur due to the breakdown of cyst again.

What are the causes of baker’s cyst?

It includes the swelling of joint known as arthritis. The increase of fluid leads to this disorder. It can also occur in children and the most common type of arthritis linked is osteo arthritis. It is also known as degenerative arthritis. It can also occur due to the breakage in cartilage and other linked knee troubles.

How baker’s cyst can be diagnosed?

It includes the use of visual examination along with the use of x rays. It can be done with the help of ultra sound or MRI scan.

How baker’s cyst can be treated?

It includes that there is no specific treatment for this disorder. When the excess of fluid from the knee is removed after that an injection of steroids is also given. Medicines are used to treat inflammation as well as pain. Surgery can be done if there is a break in the cartilage or there is another problem. The surgeon can remove the tissue which is swollen and is done with the help of surgery with arthroscopy.
