It is defined as a disorder in which there is a tumor formed by the epithelium of teeth. It is quite common in the mandible. It is not so common. In the year 1827, it was recognized by the Cusack. It is also known as adamantinoma. It was later named as ameloblastoma.

They do not lead to cancer formation and cannot go to other parts of the body. They move slowly and can lead to problems in the face as well as jaw. The growth of cells which is not normal may lead to destruction in the bone tissues. It may lead to surgery. The dentist must know that the surgery along with the other types of treatment is needed to treat this disorder.

What are the signs and symptoms of Ameloblastoma?

It includes the teeth which are not erupted. There is a swelling on the face, asymmetrical face and it may lead to pain in severe cases. It may even lead to formation of ulcers along with a loose tooth. It can even lead to periodontal diseases. They are quite common in the mandible including the ascending ramus part of mandible. It can lead to problem in the mandible as well as maxilla. In the maxilla it can extend up to maxillary sinus along with the floor of nose. It can involve the bone as slow growth of rate of lesion may lead to thin shell of bone. It may break and is known as cracking of egg shell. It is a diagnostic feature which can be confirmed by the help of x ray and microscope examination. In the x ray it looks like a radiolucent area which is well marked by the bone and gives a many loculi soap bubble look. In few cases there occurs resorption of teeth also but it is not unique. It mostly occurs in the posterior part of either the mandible or maxilla. It is mainly linked with the third molars so they must be removed as rightly said by the dentist.

How Ameloblastoma can be diagnosed?

It includes the use of visual examination and a patient history. It can also be confirmed by the help of x ray and microscope examination.

How ameloblastoma can be treated?

It includes that there is no specific treatment for this disorder except surgery. The dentist must know that the surgery along with the other types of treatment is needed to treat this disorder. The other options are chemo therapy and radiation which are not accepted normally. Some of the normal tissue is also removed along with the tumor. It is considered to be quite similar to basal cell carcinoma with its ability to spread in the rest of tissues. The tumor known as ameloblastoma spreads to the bone of jaw through the bone marrow. We need wide surgical margins which also need a good prognosis. It is quite similar to the treatment of cancer.

The other possible treatment is with the enucleating. The treatment can also be done by curettage along with liquid nitrogen. The surgical resection is one other option available. In some cases the use of radiation is effective and in some cases it is not. It may even lead to the formation of sarcomas. Even there is a big question on the viability of the treatment as by the help of chemo therapy. The use of radiations can be done in case of recurrence, formation of cancer, inability to remove the complete ameloblastoma and loss of function along with a loss of good looks. One can also look for molecular biology to treat this condition. But this has not been proven yet.

Recurrence of this problem is quite common and more in case of enucleating and curettage. It occurs when the tumors have multiple foci and it is not common when the tumor have a single focus. One must always go for a follow up and must be done at least for many years. The chances of recurrence are more after the operation is done within the 5 years. It can also recur if bone grafting is done but it is not so common. The recurrence can occur from the tissues of stem. It can occur even thirty years after the operation. One must take into account the soft tissue while doing surgery.

How Ameloblastoma can be prevented?

It mostly occurs in the posterior part of either the mandible or maxilla. It is mainly linked with the third molars so they must be removed as rightly said by the dentist. In this way it can be prevented.
