What is Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma?

It is defined as a condition in which there is a cancer which involves many sites. It is referred as AdCC.

It involves mainly the head and neck which is followed by the salivary glands. It is also seen in the cases of breast, lacrimal gland of the eye and lung, brain with the sinuses. It is also referred as the adeno cyst malignant cylindroma or adeno cystic or adenoid cystic. It is one of the most common malignant salivary gland tumors after the muco epidermoid tumor. One fourth of the sub mandibular gland tumors are represented by it. It is the single most common malignant tumor in this area.

The patients can survive for years with the process of metastasis as it grows slowly and is well differentiated. In the year 1999 a study was conducted which showed that most of the patients with this disorder had a survival rate of 90 percent at 5 years and only 40 percent at 15 years at the deaths mainly occurred from the late occurring metastatic disease.
